Fishing Requirements
A fishing license is required for all person who have reached their 17th birthday,
including those serving in the Armed Forces. When purchasing a fishing license you may use
a valid Michigan driver license, a State of Michigan ID card (issued by the Secretary of
State with additional proof of residency), or a MDNR Sportcard (purchased from a license
agent. If you have a MDNR Sportcard from a previous year and it is still accurate, you may
continue to use it. When hunting or fishing, you must carry your license and the
identification used to purchase your license with you. Licenses are valid from March 1 of
one year through March 31 of the following year.
Definitions of a resident: A person who resides in a settled or permanent home or
domicile in Michigan with the intention of remaining in Michigan or a student who is
enrolled in a full time course at a college or university within Michigan and who resides
in the state during the school year or a person regularly enlisted or commissioned as an
officer in the armed forces of the United States and officially stationed in Michigan or a
person regularly enlisted or commissioned as an officer in the armed forces of the United
States who, at the time of enlistment, was a resident of Michigan and has maintained his
or her residence in the state for the purposes of obtaining a driver license or voter
registration.

Hunting Regulations
To purchase any adults Michigan resident hunting or fur harvester license you must
reside in a permanent home within the boundaries of this state with the intention of
remaining in the state, or you must be a student enrolled in full time course work at a
college or university within this state, or you must be a person regularly enlisted or
commissioned as an officer in the armed forces of the United States and officially
stationed in this state. The ownership of land within the State of Michigan by itself is
not a qualification for a resident license. Young people ages 12 to 16 may purchase the
junior license whether they are residents or nonresidents.
All hunters born on or after January 1, 1960 when purchasing a Michigan
hunting license must present their Michigan Hunter Safety Certificate, previous hunting
license, or you must sign an affidavit stating that you have completed a Hunter Safety
Course or previously possessed a hunting license from Michigan or elsewhere. It is a
violation to furnish false information on an affidavit. This provision also applies if you
intend to hunt furbearers under a fur harvester license. It is unlawful to loan, borrow or
use the hunting license of another.
