Michigan boasts more lighthouses than any other
state - 124 aids to navigation - they will often beckon travelers and
provide a fascinating view of 19th century life on the Great Lakes.
The Michigan state highway map currently features the new Presque Isle
Lighthouse that towers 113 feet above Lake Huron. It is the tallest light
structure on the Great Lakes. Built is 1870, the tower and attached
keeper's dwelling and museum are located on a beautiful Lake Huron
Peninsula south of Rogers City near US-23. The light features its original
Fresnel lens.
A wide variety of lights, 21 in all, are located in northeast Michigan,
each have wonderful views and make excellent backdrops for family picnics,
outings and just plain relaxing.
Spectacle Reed Light located off the coast of northeast Michigan near
Cheboygan was featured recently on a United States postage stamp
celebrating the heritage of the lighthouses. This lighthouse is accessible
by water only and is not visible from the Cheboygan shoreline.
Explore and enjoy the history, the mystery and the charm that each of
these lighthouses have to offer. Many are open on a seasonal basis, others
for special occasions only. All are available for photographs and visits
from the public.
For more information contact one of the chambers of commerce or
convention and visitors bureaus in the communities where the lighthouses
are located. What a great way to spend a weekend exploring this majestic
beauty.
As we continue to develop our lighthouse page you will also find information and pictures of lighthouses along the Lake Huron
shore on a website offered by Rod Watson. Michigan Lighthouses
